APPLIES TO: Students and Faculty

ADMINISTRATIVE AUTHORITY: Office of the Registrar Office of the Provost and Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs Division of Academic & Student Affairs

APPROVED BY:

Kentucky State University Board of Regents

EFFECTIVE DATE:

NEXT REVIEW DATE: August 8, 2028

REGULATION STATEMENT:

This regulation governs the use of the non-traditional Audit (AU) and Pass/Fail (P/F) grading options.

DEFINITIONS:

Audit ("AU")

A grading option selected by a student to attend a course without receiving academic credit. The "AU" grade is not included in the grade-point average calculation.

Pass/Fail ("P/F")

A grading basis available only for specific courses where a student earns a "P" for satisfactory completion or an "F" for unsatisfactory completion. The "P" grade is not included in the GPA calculation and is equivalent to a minimum grade of "C" or better.

PROCESS:

Audit (AU) Option

A student must select the audit grading option no later than the end of the late registration period for a term. The "AU" grade must be indicated on the student's registration or add/drop form.

Audited courses do not count toward total credit hours and are not included in the GPA calculation.

Pass/Fail (P/F) Option

  • Eligibility: Pass/Fail grading is available only for cooperative education courses and for credit earned through special examination or certification.
  • Limits: A student may challenge up to six (6) semester credit hours on a P/F basis in approved courses. A student may earn a maximum of one-fourth of the credit hours required for a degree through any combination of credit by examination/certification and credit for life experience (this does not apply to co-op courses).
