POLICY STATEMENT:

The KYSU Online Academic Suspension Policy for undergraduates stipulates that students on academic probation who fail to achieve a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher will be placed on academic suspension and must remain out of the university for the following semester. Readmission after suspension requires completion of a formal application and demonstration of progress, including grade requirements for foundational and general education courses within limited attempts. Upon reinstatement, students must meet GPA targets and conditions set by the university, with ongoing support provided. Students suspended twice, or those failing reinstatement conditions, face academic dismissal for a minimum of one year. The policy outlines notification, appeals, and readmission procedures to ensure academic standards and student accountability are maintained.

DEFINITIONS:

  • Academic Probation: The status assigned to a student who was on academic warning and failed to raise their cumulative GPA to the required 2.00 minimum. A student on probation who earns a semester GPA of at least 2.00 will remain on academic probation until their cumulative GPA reaches 2.00.
  • Academic Suspension: The required withdrawal from KSU for a specified period due to a student's failure to meet the academic standards required while on academic probation.
  • Academic Warning: The initial status assigned to a student the first time their cumulative GPA drops below 2.00.
  • Good Standing: The status of a student who has a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher.
  • Academic Dismissal: The removal of a student from the university for at least one year following repeated failures to meet academic standards after suspension.
  • Cumulative GPA: The overall grade point average calculated from all coursework attempted at KSU.
  • Semester GPA: The grade point average earned in a single academic semester.
  • Readmission: The process by which a suspended or dismissed student may apply and receive approval to re-enroll in the university.
  • Academic Bankruptcy: A formal process allowing students to exclude certain grades from their GPA calculation after a period of absence, as referenced in university policy.
  • General Education/Liberal Studies Courses: Foundational courses required for all undergraduate students, such as ENG 101 and ENG 102.
  • Student Support Concierge: The staff or office responsible for coordinating required meetings and academic support check-ins for students under academic review.

PROCESS:

Notification Process

Students will be notified of suspension via their KSU university email account.

Readmission Process and Criteria

Suspended students must remain out of the University for the following semester (Fall, Spring, or Summer). To return after suspension, students must complete the KYSU Online Application for Readmission after Suspension form.

Course Attempts and Performance Requirements

  • Students must earn a grade of C or better in any courses numbered below the 100 level. These grade requirements must be met within three attempts (the initial enrollment plus two repeats). If these criteria are not met, the student will be suspended from the University.
  • Under-prepared students must show proficiency in their academic deficiency areas by the time they have completed 45 semester credit hours. Students who fail to meet this requirement will be suspended.
  • General Education and Liberal Studies Requirements: Students must achieve a grade of C or better in ENG 101 and ENG 102. A grade of D or better is required in all other Liberal Studies courses. All grades for these courses must be obtained within three attempts, or the student will be suspended.

GPA Targets

Upon reinstatement, students must earn a minimum semester GPA of 2.0, with the goal of reaching a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher to regain โ€œgood academic standing.โ€

Required Meeting(s) and Check-Ins with Student Support Concierge

The student's Student Support Concierge may require regular meetings and check-ins upon returning after suspension. Meeting requirements and check-ins will be noted in the KYSU Online Application for Readmission after Suspension.

Reinstatement

Students readmitted after suspension or dismissal must fulfill all conditions of their reinstatement. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the University.

Dismissal from the University

A student who has been suspended twice is on academic probation, and whose current grade-point average falls below 2.0 is dismissed from the University and must remain out of the University for one year.

A student who has been granted academic bankruptcy after a period of suspension and who subsequently becomes liable for suspension will be dismissed from the University.

A student who has been readmitted after suspension or dismissal and who fails to meet the conditions of his/her reinstatement shall be dismissed from the University.
