Dr. Shannon M. Brogan and Dr. Erin E. Gilles recently presented a panel entitled "A Walk to Remember: Engaging Students through Art, Communication, and Service Learning" at the 2012 Kentucky Communication Association Conference in Carrollton, Ky. The panel, which earned the 2012 KCA Top Reviewed Panel Submission, was presented with three KSU undergraduate students, Julian Jeter-Davis, Lerone Simmons, and Suncearae Spears. The panel was centered on a service-learning project in which KSU Speech Communication and Journalism students worked with community organizations to create a cell phone tour of Frankfort historical and art sites. This panel will include an overview of the project and a slideshow of student interviews, artists, and artworks. Students were assigned artists and sites to research and document for the tour. Students were trained in collecting oral histories and capturing the experiences through photography. This project aimed to broaden the horizons of KSU students through engagement in an off-campus community arts project.

Todd Davis has been KSU's representative to the University Press of Kentucky's Editorial Board for some time now, which meets once every quarter to discuss and approve book proposals and manuscripts to be published by the University Press of Kentucky.
Bea Downey has, for the last few semesters, been offering a Beginning Spanish course for those individuals in the Medical Communities. These courses are tailored to medical professionals, with specialized syntax and vocabulary specifically for those who work in local area hospitals and clinics.
Bruce Griffiths serves on the Advisory Committee for the Health Science Program at the Franklin County Career and Technical Center with an upcoming meeting date of October 25, 2012.
Robert Griffin and Hunt Butler are working with the Scott County High School Jazz Ensemble while the band director recuperates from hip surgery. The ensemble is chosen from the members of the Scott County High School Band Program, one of the largest band programs (both university and high school) in the state (Fall Term).
Robert Griffin is also assisting the high school music programs of Franklin County, Franklin High, and Shelby County (Fall Term) and will be mentoring Mr. Richard Hughes, current freshman and star percussion student, who was selected for the 2012 KMEA High School All-State Jazz Ensemble
The Access to Algebra program developed by Ms. Karen Heavin for high schools in the KSU region uses the tools developed by UK for its Web Homework System (WHS). The homework exercises are linked back to a textbook and include online videos illustrating problem solutions. Ms. Heavin works regularly with the high school math teachers in this impressive program. The Access to Algebra program is designed to expose students to the difficulty and rigor of a college course while they are still in high school. The participating teachers facilitate the course 5 days a week with access to the high school computer lab 3 to 5 days a week. The program offers students an opportunity to take the course onsite at their high school without the inconvenience of transportation difficulties of commuting to the nearest college or university. Students work in a learning environment supported by teachers, administrators and parents as well as after school programs and other additional support offered by their high school. The program offers high school seniors an opportunity to attempt the rigor of a college algebra course regardless of current math placement. Regardless of their final grade, we have found that students who diligently apply themselves gain valuable academic confidence and mathematical skill that are of immense benefit their freshman year of college. The Spring 2012 enrollment was 331 students with 8 schools participating and Fall 2012 enrollment is 107 with 7 schools participating.
