Letter from the Director
GRANT RENEWAL
“We are Back!” The staff of the Upward Bound program is indeed grateful to our students, families, and community for their support during our grant rewrite process. We have been granted the opportunity by the Department of Education to continue to enrich our students and families for the next five years.
Throughout the year, Upward Bound has been through a series of transitions. During the early part of the year we were in the process of rewriting our grant. During the summer period, we awaited a response from the federal government.
We are very optimistic about promoting TRIO and higher education to our Upward Bound family. As you may or may not know, TRIO consists of Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math and Science, Veterans Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, Student Support Services, Ronald McNair Scholars, and Educational Opportunity Centers. It is a proven fact that TRIO works!
In the month of August, we received the grant award and are currently in the process of implementing our program. This has been a roller coaster of a ride; however, with much support from our KSU community, parents, students, and Frankfort community, we are back in action.
KSU Upward Bound staff will continue to provide college readiness resources as well as express the urgency of attending college. We will also strive to keep students and parents motivated towards achieving educational goals. We will join hands to overcome obstacles that may stand in the way of your progression.
During this current school year, we will be moving full steam ahead with servicing our students. We will continue to offer tutoring, workshops, college tours, mentoring, senior meetings, leadership development, etc. The Upward Bound staff is committed to impacting the lives of our participants. We have experienced much success during the last four years with the old grant. For the next five years, we will continue to go above and beyond to impact the lives of students.
My expectations are high for each person I am given an opportunity to impact. We may have to collaborate with parents and students to sail through procellous water. However, your efforts combined with our resources can provide the anchor you need to reach college.
Senior Spotlight
I request that you mark your calendars for our upcoming activities and participate so we can achieve our short term goal of academic progress. We are fortunate to provide resources for both first generation and low income students on how to make it to college and succeed. Remember, we are here to aid you on the path to college and will equip you with the tools you need to stay there. Help us as we help you achieve your long term goal of college acceptance and college graduation.
Two of the greatest achievements of our program are the graduation of our seniors from high schools and their enrollment in college. This year, we had the opportunity to witness ten UB seniors graduate from high school. Out of the ten, eight of them enrolled in college and two enlisted in the military.
We are currently recruiting students at Franklin County, Western Hills, and Frankfort High schools. If you know of students or relatives who meet program criteria, please feel free to have them contact the UB office at 597-5525 or visit our web page at: http://www.kysu.edu/academics/continuinganddistanceeducation/upwardBound/.
This year, we have seven seniors in our Upward Bound program. Each of them is strong academic students bound for greatness. Please continue to give these students your support as they matriculate through their senior year of high school. The names of the students are listed below.
Corey Bellamy — Frankfort High School
Mackenzie Sanders —Frankfort High School
Jasmin Washington --- Frankfort High School
Nancy Adane --- Franklin County High School
Demetria Quincy --- Franklin County High School
Raven Timmons --- Franklin County High School
Ryan Timmons --- Franklin County High School

1st Annual Upward Bound Reunion
On October 27th, Upward Bound hosted its 1st Annual Kentucky State University Upward Bound Reunion. The event took place in KSU's Alumni House and Hathaway Hall. There were about fifty to sixty past and current Upward Bound participants in attendance.
Participants were greeted by Karen Bearden, Vice Chair of Kentucky State University's Board of Regents and Dr. Penny Smith, Assistant Provost of Continuing Distance Education and Outreach. Moreover, past UB participant, Mae Miles, who works in Governor Steve Beshear's office read an official proclamation which declared October 27th "Kentucky State University's Upward Bound Day."
The event included workshops and seminars on the following subjects: leadership development hosted by KSU's Student Government Association, college readiness hosted by KSU's Admission office, and an UB alumni think tank facilitated by J.H.Atkins, past UB participant from 1967 and Gill Finley, current UB Director.
In addition, participants were able to hear testimonials from 2011 UB graduate, Lauren McCoy as well as 2012 UB graduates Thamara Pires (University of Kentucky), Anthony Leachman (Bluegrass Community and Technical College), and Stephanie Robinson (Transylvania University). These students discussed how the program deeply influenced their lives and college aspirations.
Overall, the day was a great success filled with enriching and impactful activities. Most of the alumni agreed to make this annual event with plans to make it bigger and better each year. We look forward to next year's reunion.

Enjoy the simple things of life.
The other day I went for a leisure stroll to clear my mind. Filled with anxiety and discouragement, I figured that a walk on a crisp, cool day would simmer me down. Yet, my thoughts continued to race and the more I walked the more discouraged I begin to feel.
On my second stroll around the track, a gentle breeze encompassed my entire being. It was peaceful and gentle and brought a smile to my face. I took the moment to express gratitude for God's beautiful creation and the healing power it brings. Suddenly, my mind became clear and I was able to put my mind at ease. Moreover, it was at this moment that I learned a valuable lesson: enjoy the simple things in life.
my mind at ease. Moreover, it was at this moment that I learned a valuable lesson: enjoy the simple things in life.
Sometimes when life seems to burden us down or we feel as if we can't see the sun because of the clouds, it is important to take the time to enjoy the simple things in life. Take the time to observe how the trees provide shade from the sun or provide the cooling system of the wind. Observe the beautiful colors of the butterfly or the birds that fly in the air. Listen to the laughter of a baby or the sound of a child playing in the park. These are the simple things that we often overlook—the small things that create moments of joy.
University of Kentucky's Athletic Department Presentation
Saturday, November 3rd, the forecast was rain and cold. However, it did not stop the Upward Bound students and staff for preparing for an athletic presentation and University of Kentucky vs. Vanderbilt football game. Students arrived at 10a.m. to a presentation by the athletic department on the importance of education and received information about U.K.'s athletic department. They also received a behind the scenes tour which included game preparation and were also able to meet the U.K. football staff. Students also watched the University of Kentucky versus Vanderbilt University football game. Even though it was rainy and cold, the weather did not prevent this day from being fun and engaging.
