Operational overview of Aedes invasive mosquito control

A variety of methods are implemented to control Aedes invasive mosquitoes. Preventive and elimination control is often based on targeting immature stages using non-biocidal intervention and formalised social mobilisation programmes. Reactive Aedes invasive mosquito control in seven countries is based on targeting adults using biocides (Table). Several countries reported the use of various larval and adult biocidal control measures (active ingredients and products), including the following:

• Slovakia: Distribution of Culinex tablets and informational leaflets to households in affected areas.
• Italy: Implementation of source reduction, surface films, biological larvicide (Bti), and insect growth
• Cyprus: Application of Bti and Aquatain\circledR biofilm.
• Belgium: Use of Aquabac® (Bti) granules, specifically deposited in non-removable water containers (e.g., barrels) and storm drains.
• Netherlands: Employment of Bti, Bs, and Aqua K-Othrine®.
• Portugal: Spraying of diluted VectoBac12AS® on stagnant water surfaces.
• Hungary: Fogging with deltamethrin.
• Serbia: pyriproxiphen taregtting larvae at national level; diflubenzuron (Larvastop ZG), Bti (Vectobac), piriproxiphen (Larvastop Piriprox ZG) at provincial level (Vojvodina Province); and bti against larvae and pyretroids against adults (ULV treatments) at the municipal level. In protected areas only Bti is used.
• UK: Application of Silmax® and Bti.

This summary highlights the adoption of biocidal larval and adult control strategies across the countries.
