Summary

First Trimester/Booking

Offer the following patients empirical oral iron. 200mg ferrous sulphate or 300mg ferrous gluconate on alternate days.

  • Known anaemia.
  • <1year between pregnancies.
  • Adolescent pregnancies aged <19.
  • Multiparity > P3.
  • Twins/multiple pregnancy.
  • Jehovah's Witness
  • Vegan/vegetarian diet.

If Hb <70g/L urgent referral to joint haematology obstetric clinic to investigate and plan management.

Ferritin > 300mcg/L refer to GP for advice.

Ferinject is contraindicated in the first trimester.
