I he Mine Safety Review Commission, pursuant to KRS Chapter 351, protects the health and safety of coal miners by ensuring the enforcement of mine safety regulations. Its three members, appointed by the governor, conduct hearings on drug and safety violations and impose penalties for serious violations. The Commission has the power to probate, revoke or suspend a mine's license or an individual miner's certification and fine certified miners up to the equivalent of wages for ten working days for their first offense.

The Commission is an independent agency attached to the Energy and Environment Cabinet for administrative purposes only.
