Dear KSU Students, Prospective Students and Parents:
One of the most important decisions anyone makes is which college or university is right for him or her. Your interest in the KSU Catalogue indicates that you are giving serious consideration to becoming a KSU Thorobred student or that you have already made that choice. In either case, we are delighted that you are interested in Kentucky State University or that you have chosen KSU.
Kentucky State University is a truly unique institution. It has three essential components that are at its core. It is a historically black university founded in 1886. KSU is also one of only 16 1890 land grant institutions in the United States; made possible by the enactment of the Morrill Act, land grant institutions have teaching, research and public service as their core tenets. KSU also has chosen to be a small public liberal arts institution, because we believe strongly that a liberal arts education is essential in the development of well-rounded students.
At KSU, we want all of our students to graduate with the ability to think logically, to problem solve and to integrate knowledge. We also expect them to be able to use technology, to speak well publicly and to compete effectively in a global society.
We believe in the value and the strength that comes from diversity. As the most diverse of the comprehensive institutions in the Commonwealth of Kentucky with respect to our faculty, staff and students, we see daily how our diversity strengthens us and our students and how it allows us to interact effectively and to work well with people of vastly different backgrounds.
As you look around our campus, you will see dirt flying. In addition to the new Whitney M. Young Jr. Residence Hall that officially opens in August 2008, you will find Hathaway Hall - a primarily classroom building – is newly and completely renovated. KSU’s Police Department headquarters has moved to the south campus but will continue to have a presence in the Exum Center and in the Student Center. The building housing our campus police will also have two new computer labs operating 24/7 for our students’ use. A new Rosenwald Child Care Center will begin construction in late fall 2008. Additionally, construction will be under way for KSU’s Center for Sustainable Families and Farms at the Research and Demonstration Farm.

Our campus master planning process is completed as well as our strategic planning process. Both of them will aid KSU as it begins what promises to be unparalleled growth.
Whether it is our world-class music or art program, our new undergraduate program in mass communications and journalism or the relatively new Master’s in Special Education online program, our MBA program or the Whitney M. Young Jr. Honors Program, criminal justice or teacher education, math, sociology English, science, nursing or computer science, there is a high-quality program that should interest you.
I think that you will find that Kentucky State University is truly an engaged, uncommon university. Come find out what’s new on our campus and what we are doing in the communities that surround the university with respect to public service and regional stewardship.
Thank you for your interest in a truly remarkable institution. Sincerely,
Mary Evans Sias, Ph.D. President
