Propagating ornamental plants can be a long process generally taking a month or more to complete and involves processes using sexual and asexual methods. Cutting method was examined for four different types of orchids, and two types of medium substrate for propagation of coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) and spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) were examined. Preliminary results indicate that the cuttings and plantlet propagation with the vermiculite substrate performed best within the ten-day research period.
Orchids are a universally widespread group of plants commonly used as decorative ornamentals. This orchid family is one of the largest families of flowering plants and included Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia Jacks. ex Andrews). Horticulturists have produced more than 100,000 hybrid varieties and even more numerous cultivars of orchids. Orchids can be propagated both sexually and asexually, but it is an often difficult and slow process. Sexual reproduction involves an exchange of genetic materials and, in general, none of the offspring are genetically identical. In contrast, asexual reproduction involves the acquisition of plants that are genetically identical to the mother plant via
