Working on plant metabolism of agricultural chemicals: Methomyl, Thiodicarb and Carbofuran.
Residues of Carbofuran (Furadan) and its non-conjugated toxic metabolites; 3-hydroxy carbofuran and 3-keto carbofuran together with the water soluble conjugated form of carbofuran; 3-hydroxy carbofuran glycoside were analyzed individually in faba bean plants. Acephate (Orthene)
deacetylation to methamidophos (Monitor) was also monitored in tomato, pepper and cucumber under greenhouse conditions.
2- Expertise related to bioremediation techniques: I have developed and installed the 1st National Biobed (biofilter) at Kentucky State University Research Farm (Franklin county, KY 40601) to reduce the impact of pesticides and heavy metals on environmental quality & Delivered new technology in 1998 in KY counties to increase crop yield and reduce dependence on synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. This has resulted in significant saving for limited resource farmers.
3- Expertise related to soil enzymes: The activity of enzymes involved in the C, N, and P cycles were used as indicators of increased microbial populations, as predictors of soil fertility, and as indicators of toxic effects of sludge-borne metals on soil organisms.
4- Expertise related to heavy metals (Pb, Ni, Cd, Cu, Zn, Mo, Cr) in edible plants (squash, potato, sweet potato, pepper, melons, eggplants) in relation to the maximum residue limits, heavy metals in soil, and runoff water following natural rainfall events.
5- Glandular trichome Counts: Gland hairs of wild tomato leaves with reference to plant resistance to insects and spider mites and concentrations of methylketones, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and glucolipids in trichome tips of certain wild tomato accessions, Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40546
6- Assessment of virus-infected plants (soybean and cowpea mosaic virus) using serological methods including various forms of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests and purification of an antifungal peptide secreted by Helminthosporium victoriae, a soil-born plant pathogen, Plant Pathology Department, College of Agriculture, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40546-0091 (USA).
7- Conducted large scale pesticides experiments of the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture including aircraft ultra-low volume (ULV) to evaluate the efficiency of recently introduced insecticides against cotton-leaf worms in various governorates of Egypt including El-Beheira and Alexandria Province. Recommendations have been issued for safe reentry intervals (time after which the detected residues fall below the maximum residue limits).
8- Worked as chemist and technical consultant supervising the production of nozzles, CO2-sprayers, and other instruments used in agricultural field at the F.E.B.E. Limited Company, Division of Agricultural Instrumentation, Gregory Avenue, Athens, Greece, 1984-1985.
9- Worked as chemist with USDA/ARS, South Carolina (1995-1996) on USDA research project titled "Glucosinolates, Ascorbic Acid and Sugar Contents of Turnip in Relation to Colored Mulches".
Antonius developed a new simplified technique for quantification of glucosinolates in cruciferous crops.
10- Conducted research projects (1995-1997) with Shawnee Research & Development & Organic Solutions Chemical Companies (Private Sectors), on the Fate and Dissipation of Pyrethrin's (Natural Products) and Piperonylbutoxide (a synergist), Organic Solutions Company, 8023 Vantage Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78230.
11- Worked on chemical control of agricultural pests: Emphasized on the protection of aerial plant parts of vegetable crops against leaf feeding insects: Cabbage looper, Trichopulsiia ni, Spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, Egyptian cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae); Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), cucumber beetles,
