- In other words, in his email to Dr. Stokes, PW said he could accept the way Dr. Stokes taught her class. Additionally, as indicated above, Dr. Clark told Dr. Stokes she would find PW a note taker for the class.
- Nevertheless, on January 21, 2016, at 10:06 AM, Dr. Stokes replied to PW saying:
- Your official request for accommodations contains three items. I cannot alter my course delivery method to accommodate any of these three:
- "Extended time on exams (time and a half)." The writing activities must be done within a certain amount of time for the class to progress. We will be doing some version of "answer this question in writing for ten minutes" and then move on to a breakout session, a small group discussion, or another activity that builds on the writing and that depends on its being completed in ten minutes.
- "Testing in a low distraction environment (ORC, ACE, professor's office). Student should schedule place of exam at least one week in advance." The time to-writing activities create a noisy classroom. Most of these activities require students to talk in groups.
- "Notetakers or detailed notes from instructors." This course is not a lecture course, a course that uses a variety of hands-on activities to engage students according to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic as well as timed-writing-in-class activities. Therefore a note-taker will be useless in it. Each student has to produce his own writing on the spot. He has to take his own notes -- processing material in writing, in his own words, is crucial to learning.
- I do these noisy and timed-writing activities, a LOT of them, every class., To engage students and to keep them engaged. These aspects of the way I teach the course will not be altered.
