10. Add Street Trees and Sidewalks on W 12th Street
11. Study the Feasibility of a Roundabout at Peninsula Drive and W 6th Street
The project team has identified W 12th Street as a significant corridor in the District, albeit one that will continue to cater more to vehicular traffic than it does to pedestrian or bicycle movement. Regardless, Millcreek should pursue the streetscape treatments that are included in the preferred corridor alternative. W 12th Street should include consistent tree lawns, street trees and sidewalk, comprising safe and convenient pedestrian facilities, further detailed in the corridor alternative shown below. Consistent street trees will also create a consistent street wall and enclosure along the corridor.
The intersection of Peninsula Drive and W 6th Street presents an opportunity for a roundabout. It currently contains four travel lanes on Peninsula Drive to accommodate high levels of seasonal traffic. It also includes wide right-turning bays on all approaches.
Roundabouts function as traffic calming features that allow for a continuous flow of traffic at safer low speeds. A roundabout at this intersection would provide a safe and unique entrance to Presque Isle State Park and would be able to allow consistent traffic flow during the busy summer season. A roundabout at this intersection also provides an opportunity to install a unique gateway feature that also functions as a piece of public art.
A feasibility study should be performed to determine whether a roundabout at this intersection would be able to function properly and would help determine the optimal size and dimensions for the roundabout.
