The second area in the East Section starts near the intersection of Indiana Drive and W 8th Street and ends near the Bayfront Motel property just before Sommerheim Drive.
This area includes potential redevelopment sites on the north side of the corridor at the Bayfront Motel and Park Plaza sites. Future redevelopment in this area should include buildings that are closer to the street and well-integrated with the pedestrian and public realms. Entrances should front the street and connect to the sidewalk to further encourage pedestrian activity. Parking should be to the rear of the buildings with a shared access off Sommerheim and if needed, one entrance off from W 8th Street.
Mid-block crossings should be considered throughout the W 8th Street corridor in strategic locations. These crossings should be located 300-500 feet away from the nearest crossing and should connect at or near locations with existing or future key development sites.
Millcreek Township should reduce curb cuts along W 8th Street as a long-term objective. This is shown on this section by consolidating several curb cuts on existing sites into a single vehicle access point to a rear parking area for multiple properties. For sites located on side street corners, access should be located on the side street. In the future, the reduction of curb cuts will make it possible to remove the center turn lane on W 8th Street and re-allocate that space to on-street parking or bike lanes.
