Peninsula Drive is a two way street. It also has ample right-of-way of about 75 feet, which allows for flexibility in street concepts.
Vehicle Travel Lanes: 4 lanes, 12 feet wide each
Bike Lanes: 2 lanes, 6 feet wide, east and west sides
Tree Lawn: 5 feet wide and buffers sidewalk from the street, east side only
Sidewalk: 5 feet wide, north and south sides
This concept allows for two-way bicycle traffic on the street that directly links to Presque Isle State Park. Ideally, all sidewalk would be buffered from the roadway with a planted tree lawn.
Figure 18: Peninsula Drive Concept 1
Vehicle Travel Lanes: 3 lanes, 11 feet wide each
The north approach retains two lanes, but the south approach only includes one. This is due to an assumption that people exiting the State Park would have more options to divert away from traffic on Peninsula Drive
Bike Lanes: Integrated into Multi-Use Trail (see below)
Tree Lawn: 10 feet wide on west side, 11 feet wide on east side.
Sidewalk: 5 feet wide, west side only
Multi-Use Trail: 12 feet wide allowing for two way pedestrian and bicycle traffic, east side only
A multi-use trail was included to connect to a planned multi-use trail farther north.
The project team determined that the first concept was preferable, mostly owing to the inclusion of two travel lanes in both directions. The project team agreed that the second concept had many benefits, particularly for pedestrians, and could be worth re-visiting in the future.
