W 8TH STREET
The concepts on the next three pages represent stretches of W 8th Street in the District. Because the right-of-way for W 8th Street varies, its concepts are organized into three sections to account for differences in widths.
Accommodating Bikes
Limited right-of-way width along with required lane configuration and widths make accommodating bicyclists a challenge along W 8th Street. If an access management strategy can be implemented to the point where the center turn lane is deemed unnecessary the street could be re-striped to include a 5 foot bike lane in each direction. In the interim, shared lane markings or “sharrows” could be considered. Speed limit, traffic volume, lane width and other physical characteristics are factors when considering shared use lanes.

East Section
The concepts on this page represent the east section of W 8th Street. The east section begins at Pittsburgh Avenue and continues west to Sommerheim Drive. The right-of-way for this stretch is approximately 60 feet.
W 8th Street - East Concept 1
Vehicle Travel Lanes: 2 lanes, 11 feet wide each
Center-Turn Lane: 1 lane, 10 feet wide
Tree Lawn: 6 feet wide on the south, 8 feet on the north. Both tree lawns buffer the sidewalk.
Sidewalk: 5 feet wide on the south side and 7 feet wide on the north
Parking: No on-street parking
W 8th Street - East Concept 2
Sidewalk: 5 feet wide on both sides of the street
Vehicle Travel Lanes: 2 lanes, 11 feet wide each
Center-Turn Lane: 1 lane, 10 feet wide
Tree Lawn: 7 feet wide on both sides of the street. Both tree lawns buffer the sidewalk.
Parking: On-street parking on the north side
Preferred Concept: Concept 1
The project team determined that the first concept was preferable. There is not as much of a need for on-street parking in this section and the first concept includes both tree lawns and sidewalks.
