W 6th Street is a two way street with generous shoulders. It has a generous right-of-way of about 80 feet, which allows for flexibility in street concepts.
Vehicle Travel Lanes: 2 lanes, 11 feet wide each
Bike Lanes: 2 lanes, 5 feet wide, north and south sides
Tree Lawn: 6 feet wide and buffers sidewalk from the street, north and south sides
Sidewalk: 5 feet wide, north and south sides
Additional green space is shown on either side of the street due to the existing large public right-of-way. The width of additional green space may need to be adjusted to better accommodate private development in certain locations along the corridor.
Vehicle Travel Lanes: 2 lanes, 11 feet wide each
Bike Lanes: Integrated into Multi-Use Trail (see below)
Tree Lawn: 6 feet wide and buffers sidewalk and multi-use trail from the street, north and south sides
Sidewalk: 5 feet wide, south side only
Multi-Use Trail: 12 feet wide allowing for two way pedestrian and bicycle traffic, north side only
Figure 9: W 6th Street Concept 1
Due to the amount of private residences on the north side of the street, the multi-use trail in Concept 2 was found to be difficult to implement throughout the corridor. Concept 1 was the preferred concept because it still provides consistent bicycle and pedestrian facilities along the corridor without potentially encroaching near front yards. It is also consistent with plans that the City of Erie has for W 6th Street.
