courts. These programs cannot run simultaneously, but it provides a host of opportunities.
While it is the preference of most basketball “traditionalist” to have a hardwood court for basketball, B*K would recommend that the Township consider a synthetic court surface. By employing this finish it allows for the court space to be used for traditional activities like basketball and volleyball, but also allows for a plethora of other indoor sports activities. The space should have a divider curtain that lowers and retracts from the ceiling.
Finally, because of the synthetic surface such a space would allow for a variety of non-traditional uses such as; birthday parties with inflatables, home and garden shows, dog shows, arts and craft fairs, etc. Because of the wide variety of events that could take place in this space, B*K would recommend a roll-up door that opens onto grade to easily move equipment in and out of the space.
Because of the popularity of exercise walking B*K would recommend the inclusion of an indoor walking track. The Township has 2 options to choose from for this amenity. First, because of the 10-foot buffer around the playing courts participants could merely walk the perimeter of the gymnasium. While this is a cost-effective option, it does not allow for activities like basketball or volleyball to take place without the risk of injuring a nearby walker. Second, the Township could include an elevated walking track that could be used whenever the building is open to the public. The allocation below accommodates an 8-foot wide track that covers the perimeter of the gymnasium.
There should be designated storage off the gymnasium with at minimum one double door access. A best-case scenario would be 1 set of double door access and 1 roll-up garage door access to the space. Depending upon ceiling height B*K would also encourage the Township to look at “lofting” this space for items in long term / seasonal storage.
At the far end of the multi-purpose room B*K would recommend the inclusion of a dance studio/group exercise space. This space should be outfitted with hard wood floors and have mirrors on 3 of 4 walls. This space should also have its own, independent AV system. This space should be raised 3-4 feet higher than the multi-purpose rooms and the fourth wall should be able to open (accordion-style) into the multi-purpose room. The reason for this is that it allows the dance studio to function as a “stage” for events in the multi-purpose room.
