Pursuant to the Principles of Accreditation of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), a mission statement for a university must be clearly defined and comprehensive. It must also effectively guide the public's perception of a university. A mission statement conveys an institution's uniqueness and identifies the qualities, characteristics, and values that define an institution's role within the field of higher education. Fundamental to the structure of an institution's effectiveness, the mission statement reflects a clear understanding of an institution by its governing board, administration, faculty, students, staff, and stakeholders.
As referenced in Section 2 of the Principles of Accreditation, a mission statement is a core requirement of an institution, as it addresses an institution's teaching and learning initiatives and, when applicable, its research and public service initiatives as well.
