INF 8: Sustainable streets
1. In order to maximise the sustainability of our streets, development must, where relevant to the type and scale of development and its potential traffic impact:
create welcoming areas that offer shelter and shade and provide frequent opportunities for people to rest, linger, socialise and play;
develop spaces that promote sustainable modes of transport through giving more space to these modes and minimising barriers to their movement;
provide more economically vibrant spaces including supporting proposals for street cafes and similar facilities on the public highway;
create more pleasant spaces and address biodiversity net gain requirements by embedding green infrastructure, including native tree planting;
mitigate the impacts of air and noise pollution and carbon emissions from road transport;
mitigate the negative effects of climate change on the streetscape through SuDs and the use of planting that can cope with predicted weather patterns;
ensure that streets and road layouts are safe for all users and are designed to help people feel safe enough to choose walking, wheeling, cycling or public transport;
deliver lower speed schemes including 20 mph zones, limits, and quiet lanes to encourage walking, wheeling and cycling and improve road safety;
maximise the efficient movement of all street users while managing the movement of goods and services in a way that minimises disruption;
harness new mobility technologies that will contribute to the sustainability of streets and provide a better experience for users;
ensure that streets include transport infrastructure, including bus stops and cycle parking; and
mitigate for unacceptable severing of the ecological network and/or nature network by providing wildlife crossing structures such as
