Thomas McPartland, Chair of the Whitney Young School, has an article, “The Critique of History and the Pure Line of Progress: Lonergan's Legacy,” published in the peer-reviewed Lonergan Workshop, vol. 23 (2012). In this article he argues that the legacy of Bernard Lonergan, the author of Insight: A Study of Human Understanding, is the most nuanced treatment of the process of inquiry as structure in the philosophical literature. His clear differentiation of insight and conceptualizing allows Lonergan to adopt a “critical realist” position on knowing, which can establish objective and dynamic norms for a critique of history as a contribution to the intelligent direction of history.
