Faculty in the math department identified one section of Intermediate Algebra (MAT 097-02) and one section of the College Algebra (MAT 115-05) to determine the achievability of ALP success in mathematics. Students were dually enrolled in both courses over the fall 2014 term. Students participated in classes five days per week. The curriculum for the MAT 097-02/MAT115-05 ALP combination integrated developmental content (e.g. basic arithmetic, pre-algebra, and elementary algebra) from MAT 097 with the College algebra curriculum while concurrently teaching the new and related concepts. The pilot results showed that students enrolled in the pilot courses MAT 097-02/MAT 115-05 achieved greater success than students in the other MAT 115 courses (MAT 115-01-MAT 115-04) (Table 3).
A similar pilot was conducted in ENG 099-Developmental English and ENG 101-English Composition I, with similar outcomes. As a result, the University launched the Accelerated Learning programs in Math and English in the spring 2015, phasing out developmental courses.
