3. First-year students or their advisors likely did not realize they enrolled in a virtual course due to the fact that the virtual sections permitted enrollment. The coding system was not communicated to advisors or students.
Fall 2011 through spring 2014, data shows 974 freshmen enrolled in online courses (Distance Ed Analyses Report).
Of the 974 first year students enrolled in online courses, 283 (29%) received a grade of F in their course.
Online Course Quality and Development
Currently, there is no required structure, format, or oversight in place for online course development (A review of Quality Matter results showed a very broad range of levels of the quality of online course content and development).
I here is no precise or required designation or purpose for the “specific or type” of course permissible for online. For example, online courses ranged from 100-level courses, such as ENG 101 and SPA 101 to 400-level courses such as AQU 407.
There is no management in place to oversee and review online teaching and learning although chairs have access to online courses, via Blackboard, in their departments.
Faculty
Online oversight, development, faculty evaluation of courses, or feedback are not in place.
Student evaluations of faculty are available, yet the evaluations have not been incorporated into faculty development training.
Courses taught in the face-to-face modality are mandated to maintain a certain number of face to face instructional hours. Kentucky State University does not have safeguards that prevent faculty members from changing the mode of instruction presentation (i.e., online, face to face, and hybrid-blended).
Advising
Limited advising and understanding of online courses appears to have resulted in permitting student enrollment in online courses
Flags were not in place to signal to the advisor not to place freshmen in online courses.
Next Steps/Moving Forward
The Academic Policies Committee of the Faculty Senate has begun to address some of the issues of online learning at Kentucky State University. They will be asked to establish a teaching and learning online policy for the institution by December 15, 2015.
