Re: Promotion Evaluation: Dr. Tamara Sluss

I have reviewed Dr. Sluss's dossier which she submitted along with her application for promotion to the rank of full professor, the letters of recommendation by the eligible unit faculty members and the recommendation letter submitted by the Unit Tenure and Promotion Committee.

The majority of the faculty members whose evaluations were solicited by the Chairperson and the Unit Tenure and Promotion Committee supported Dr. Sluss's application for promotion to the rank of full professor.

Teaching Effectiveness (Professional Competence):

The evaluation letters recognize and commend Dr. Sluss's knowledge in her discipline, her contribution to the curriculum development and biology education, student advising and research. The Unit Tenure and Promotion Committee members have accurately addressed Dr. Sluss's teaching effectiveness and I concur with the committee's evaluation of Dr. Sluss's teaching effectiveness. Dr. Sluss contributed to the biology instruction and curriculum development by developing a variety of undergraduate and graduate level courses, teaching for and serving on the board of Cooperative Center for Study Abroad, supervising undergraduate research for several biology majors, advising and teaching the biology capstone courses.

In terms of teaching, curriculum development, outreach activities, working with student and faculty, Dr. Sluss is an asset to the Division of Mathematics and Sciences and the University.

Scholarly and Creative Activity:

Dr. Sluss has published four articles in peer-reviewed journals since her promotion to associate professor. Her work on the funded grant projects has resulted in several conference presentations, and undergraduate research activities which provided students the opportunity to present their results at various conferences. Dr. Sluss's research includes student learning component which enabled her to mentor fourteen undergraduate and four graduate research.

I agree with the Unit T&P Committee that Dr. Sluss presented adequate evidence in this area.
