The Kentucky State University Boiler Plant was originally built in 1977 and renovated in 1989. The boiler plant has 3 boilers, two (2) coal fired, and one (1) gas fired. The two (2) coal boilers are 36 years old and were constructed in 1977. The gas boiler was built in 1987 and originally meant as a supplemental boiler to the coal boilers.
The building has 3,170 SF and is in Fair condition. The boilers are in poor condition.
The 4,363 linear feet of steam lines were also installed beginning in 1977. The steam lines have surpassed there useful life cycle. They will not hold the pressure needed to economically heat the campus. The line develops multiple leaks when pressure is being brought up.
The existing central steam plant provides heat to most of the buildings located north of US60. This project will distribute that function to four boiler rooms distributed around the campus to proved hot water heat to all the buildings. Existing space within Bell Gym, Blazer Library, Hill Student Center is being renovated to construct the boiler rooms. The existing central steam plant is the space to be renovated for the fourth boiler room.
"Repair Boilers & Aging Distribution Lines" is an authorized project currently constructing half the required scope. A Phase II is required for 2018 -2020.
