Therefore, what you will find here are charts that outline data fields that are critical to making these calculations.

The first area, to be reviewed, is the faculty to student ratio based on program enrollment. Many of KSU's programs are overstaffed with faculty. Likewise, there are a few programs where significant enrollments exist, but an inadequate number of faculty are available to deliver instruction.

Faculty by Program and Degree Level

Table 2 demonstrates that Kentucky State University has ample faculty with the doctoral degree. Every degree program has at least one full-time faculty member with the doctoral degree except for Health and Physical Education. In that program, there are two part-time faculty members with the doctorate and care is taken to ensure that the students are scheduled to receive at least twenty-five percent of their degree required course hours from instructors with doctorates. While inadequately staffed in this one program, through strategic management of the schedule, the university can ensure compliance with SACS Standard 3.5.4 (see Appendix D). Dr. Beverly Downing and one other faculty member hold earned doctoral degrees in health and physical education. Of the 29 credit hours in the content area 10 credit hours are taught by these individuals in the physical education teaching program. This represents 34% of the content. In the physical education non-teaching program, there are 42 content hours of which 12 credit hours are taught by these individuals. This represents 28.5% of the content. In both cases, the 25% SACS requirement is exceeded.

There are 151 full-time teaching faculty at Kentucky State University. Of these faculty members, 116 (77%) faculty members hold doctoral degrees and 35 (23%) faculty members hold Master’s degrees (including three that are all but dissertation). The terminal degree is defined differently in some disciplines. The Juris Doctorate (JD) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) are considered terminal degrees in their disciplines. These latter levels are not included in the doctoral calculation. If added to the doctoral category, then the number of faculty with the doctorate would be increased by five (5).

It is also important to note that the faculty size currently in place at KSU once served a student population of more than 2,300. Over the past two years, that enrollment number has dropped drastically to less than 1,800 students. With only 49% of the faculty tenured (49% of 151=74), there is opportunity for reduction of faculty.
