KENTUCKY STATE UNIVERSITY Regular Meeting of the Board of Regents Student Affairs Committee January 22, 2015 4:00 to 5:00 pm Board Room – Academic Services Building Frankfort, Kentucky
The student services division sector of the University has returned to its former title of The Office of Student Affairs. Dr. Vernell Bennett assumed the position of Vice President for Student Affairs on December 8, 2014. Since that time, the division’s priorities have been: improved customer service; holistic programming, student, faculty and staff engagement; streamlining the Admissions process to make it more efficient; reformatting the Open House; integrating student input into the programming for Student Life; developing learning communities in the residential halls; cross-training within the various units; and, developing and implementing the in-state recruitment initiative – “The Thorobred Express.”
The Thorobred Express is a mobile recruitment initiative that takes Kentucky State University’s campus across the state. Equally important as the need for in-state recruitment is the goal of showing the Commonwealth the quality of programs, faculty, and students at KSU. The Thorobred Express features a college fair and partnerships between faculty and high school and community college instructors. Each of KSU’s academic units will participate in the college fair. KSU faculty (in collaboration with the teachers) will provide classroom instruction and conduct master classes in the local schools. Prospective students will have an opportunity to apply and receive an admission decision on the same day (provided their test scores and high school transcripts are available). Students receive priority consideration for academic, vocal and instrumental performance scholarships. Auditions will be held at each stop.
The inaugural stop of the Thorobred Express is scheduled for January 30, 2015 in Hopkinsville. The college fair will be held at the Bruce Convention Center from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. An assembly will be held at 1:00 p.m. The hour-long assembly will feature students, faculty, staff, administrators and various student ensembles. The fair will conclude with giveaways and an accounting of the number of applications received at the stop and the amount of scholarship monies for which the applicants were qualified. Students from the Hopkinsville area who have been accepted at KSU will also be recognized at that time.
Prior to the assembly, a press conference will be held where the presidents of KSU and Hopkinsville Community College will sign a joint Articulation Agreement between the two schools. The Mayor of Hopkinsville will proclaim Friday, January 30, 2015 as “Kentucky State University Day”. High schools and community colleges from Hopkinsville, Fort Campbell, Cadiz, Russellville, Paducah, Henderson, and Elkton, Kentucky, as well as Clarksville, Tennessee have been invited to the fair.
