Proposed Accelerated Learning Program

All students will enroll in accelerated ENG 101 and ENG 103. Students who are not meeting the mathematics benchmarks will enroll in accelerated quantitative reasoning courses linked to the degree pathway of the student. Quantitative reasoning pathways currently are Accelerated College Algebra for students majoring in STEM, psychology, nursing and business. Students in non-STEM disciplines such as education, social sciences and liberal studies will enroll in general math courses.

The curriculum for each course delivers the prerequisite material for students as needed. Partially, for this reason, supplemental instructors will be mandatory and an integral part of the accelerated classes. These classes will meet five days a week instead of the traditional three days a week. Two of the days will be led by the instructional counselors in collaboration with the class instructor.

General Education Integrated Studies (IGS) Requirement

The IGS courses requirements at Kentucky State University were reviewed in a comprehensive effort to reduce the number of hours required in our general education core. The general education core was reduced from 58 to 44 credit hours in 2012. As a result of this work, the IGS requirements of students was reduced by one course. Students are now required to complete three courses (nine credit hours) of IGS coursework.

In comparison with other public universities, the IGS courses would be identified as courses in humanities. The University of Kentucky requires one course in humanities. The University of Louisville requires six credit hours of humanities. Eastern Kentucky University requires a three-credit hour humanities course. KSU requires two to three times as many of these courses than our in-state peer institutions.
