5-Year Grade Trends - % DFW

All calculations presented below make use of data received from the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness. Data retrieved are based on all courses offered in any given semester, with grades reported for students who received a posted grade for the course.

The percentage is calculated by taking the total number of grades D, F, and W divided by the total number of students in the class at the end of term plus those who received a grade of W for withdrawing from the course.

  • This graph shows the relationship of DFW grades earned to total enrollment in the respective category or area at the end of the semester.
  • As expected, the highest % of grades DFW are earned by students completing general education courses.
  • While the highest % of grades DFW are earned in the category of general education and university required courses (freshman orientation), the overall trend is decreasing.
  • These courses are taken primarily by freshmen and sophomore students.
  • Students may not be totally prepared for college level work when they enter the University.
  • Attendance, or lack thereof contributes to the DFW % in all courses.
  • This has been impacted by several factors including, but not limited to:
  • The incorporation of developmental courses within the college level courses in the areas of English and Mathematics.
