Seasonal CRD Preparedness Tips March: Flood Preparedness
As spring approaches, flood risks can become more prevalent due to an increase in rain. Floods are the most common disaster in the United States. Failing to evacuate flooded areas or entering flood waters can lead to injury or death.
Tip #1: Preparing for a flood:
Know your flood risks:
○ Visit FEMA's Flood Map Service Center (msc.fema/gov/portal/home)
Purchase flood insurance:
o Homeowners insurance policies do not cover flooding.
○ It can take 30 days for a policy to go into effect. Purchase before a flood. (fema.gov/flood-insurance)
Preparing for a flood:
○ Make a plan for your household/pets.
Learn and practice evacuation routes, shelter plans, and flash flood response.
○ Gather supplies (non-perishable foods, cleaning supplies, and water) for several days.
Tip #2: Staying safe during a flood:
Stay Safe:
Evacuate immediately, if told to do so. Never drive around barricades.
Listen to EAS, NOAA Weather Radio or local alerting systems for more information.
Walking / Driving:
Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters. Turn Around. Don't Drown!
Stay off bridges. Fast-moving water can wash bridges away without warning.
Stay inside your car if trapped in moving water.
☑ Get on the roof if water is rising inside the car.
Building Safety:
○ Go to the highest level if trapped in a building.
Only get on the roof if necessary, but signal for help if so
Do not climb into a closed attic. You may be trapped by rising water.
