GILBERT GUTTENTAG, 15 DEXTER LANE: He stated that regarding this same resolution, where he lived before the government did not get involved in these matters. He understands that Mr. Broderick is a union leader who is personally being supportive, but it is his opinion that government should let the labor settle their own issues. He explained that they represent everyone in town and he is sure there are people who are not in favor of one point of view or the other. He thinks that the town should only say that the two parties should settle the issues as quickly as possible. He thinks it is unethical for a township to take a position against an individual company. He recommended that they take a neutral position because they represent everyone in town.
JOSEPH DEMUTH, 98 JOHNSON LANE: He explained that he is a member of Local 1289 of the IBEW and U3 covers all five unions for JCP&L. He wanted to let them know that this strike effects everybody here. They are sending brand new equipment out to Ohio and they don’t spend the money in the community anymore. He wanted everyone to know that this is not only a labor issue, but also a community issue. He explained that he works on the Lakewood line that covers Jackson too and there were 25 guys there and they are now down to 15 linemen. They have forced overtime now because they have to make up for 10 people who have retired because of this organization taking over. Prior to this new company taking over JCP&L and its employees volunteered to do many different things for the communities and that has also stopped. He stated that as a resident of Jackson he would hope they would “demand” this be looked at.
SHARRIE WILLIAMS, 4 COLUMBINE DRIVE: She stated that she believes that it is a good idea to urge a settlement, but she doesn’t believe that it is our business to take a side. Committeeman Seda stated that being new here he doesn’t know how the township interacted with JCP&L as a whole so he wrote a memo requesting that information. He did receive a memo back with basic information and stating that he was copied on some articles regarding the strike. The intent of his questioning was to better understand how Jackson Township works with this company and if there is anything they can do as a governing body to protect our interest as a township. One of his concerns is that the striking forces that are out there are hard working people like they are. The bigger concern is Jackson Township getting a fair shake throughout this strike, prior, and thereafter. This is not to settle their strike, but to make sure while they are striking that Jackson Township gets the best service possible. He wished the workers on strike well and hoped that both parties come to terms as soon as possible so as not to negatively affect each other. Committeeman Giblin explained that the interaction they have as a community is if a light goes out on a street and a resident calls it in JCP&L has 48 or 72 hours to go out and fix that light and that timeframe isn’t being met. Also, when Project Playground was being built members of JCP&L volunteered their time to put in the poles and according to Mr. DeMuth that isn’t happening anymore. He explained to Mr. Seda that these are two instances that are directly related to what he asked about.
Administrator Salerno explained that he was sick last week and when replying to the questions Mr. Seda asked he did give a little more detail to the secretary then what was typed. He has communicated with Mr. DeMuth and members of his family. He would have gotten Committeeman Seda more information, but he was trying to give him back a quick answer. Committeeman Seda explained that if Mr. Salerno had a problem getting him any more information he could have called and let him know that he was home sick. When he brought it up tonight it was just a clarification of what he got based on what he requested. Mr. Salerno explained that he did check with Public Works regarding the number of complaints they have had and he was waiting for an answer back. He explained what he was trying to say is that we are a customer of JCP&L, they provide us with a service and there are other interactions as Committeeman Giblin stated. Committeeman Reilly asked if Mr. Salerno received an answer from Public Works regarding the street lights? Mr. Salerno replied he hasn’t received an answer yet because they were tied up with the snow removal. Deputy Mayor Kafton explained that if Shop Rite goes on strike you can go somewhere else and when you are dealing with JCP&L you don’t have somebody else to go to. If the airlines go on strike the President gets involved. If this utility is on strike and it is effecting this township and it’s residents then there is a point where we need to speak up and that is what they are trying to do here.
