Several site investigations of the project site were conducted during the design process. The following inventory describes the existing environmental conditions on site.
The project site lies within the outer coastal plain physiographic province. The project site is located within the Coastal Plain geomorphic province. The geologic framework of the Coastal Plain is one of underlying gently southeastward dipping unconsolidated clays, marls, silts and sands of the tertiary (65 to 1.75 million years ago) period.
The project lies within the Kirkwood Formation, which is overlain by the Cohansey Sand and underlain by the Shark River/Manasquan Marl. The Kirkwood Formation crops out along the northern part of Ocean County. The Kirkwood Formation ranges in thickness from a minimum of 50 feet in the outcrop area, to a maximum reported thickness of about 800 feet in Atlantic City (Geology and Groundwater Resources of Ocean County, NJ 1969).
The topography of the site slopes gradually from the northwest towards the southeast and south.
Figure 2 is a copy of the USGS Quadrangle Topography Map with the site located.
The project site lies within the watershed of the South Branch of the Metedeconk River. Figure 2 is a copy of the USGS Quadrangle Topography Map with the site located. The existing topography of the site generally grades from the east to the west, sloping towards Jackson Mills Road. The existing elevations range from about 112 feet above MSL to 125 feet above MSL. According to the Ocean County Soil Survey, the following soil types exist on the project site.
| Soil Type | % Slope | Depth to SHWT* | HSG* |
|---|---|---|---|
| LasB – Lakewood Sand | 2-5 | > 6 feet | A |
| BerAr-Berryland Sand | 0-6 | 0- 6 inches | A/D |
*SHWT = Seasonal High Water Table *HSG = Hydrologic Soil Group
