Green Wedge (c(i)) Between Whetstone, Enderby, Glen Parva, Braunstone, Blaby, Littlethorpe, Narborough and Cosby (Soar Valley South) (North) – Parcel B
Purpose Question Assessment
- Overall Assessment for Purpose 2 The Great Central Way (former disused railway) provides a clear defensible boundary along part of the Eastern edge of the parcel although the area under development to the South of this lacks a clear defensible edge. The parcel otherwise performs strongly in relation to this function. Purpose Score: Moderate/Strong contribution.
- Guide development form Question 2A. Does the land form defensible boundaries along its edges that defines or would influence the pattern of development or is there an alternative? Answer 2A: The line of the Great Central Way (former disuse railway) forms a defensible boundary along the East of the wedge but it is not fully retained in the southern part of this parcel. The area adjacent Westdale Avenue (within the settlement of Whetstone) has planning permission for 165 dwellings and is under construction. From the details approved however, the boundary abutting the Green Wedge lacks a clear defensible boundary in this location. The line of the existing built-up area to the West is uniform in appearance and has established tree and hedgerows, providing a distinct boundary and perceptual limit as to where development could appropriately take place. This boundary is reinforced by the presence of the floodplain which abuts much of the edge in this location, and Jubilee Park, both of which help safeguard the boundary and discourage development.
