Green Wedge (b) Between Whetstone, Blaby and Countesthorpe - Parcel C

Countesthorpe (or vice-versa) via Blaby Oaks Wood and its network of paths gives a distinct sense of separateness between the settlements. On the west side of the parcel, adjacent Winchester Road, there is a strong, thick hedgerow fronting Winchester Road that restricts the view of the fields beyond into this part of the Green Wedge. Whilst this strong hedgerow (with no significant level of development seen beyond it) is considered a feature that provides for a visual perception of distance between the settlements it is worth noting that along this stretch of Winchester Rd, views of both the edges of Blaby and Countesthorpe are possible.

Question 1C: Does the land include uses or proposed developments that are incompatible with the Green Wedge policy. Answer 1C: The land uses within this part of the Green Wedge are generally compatible with the policy, i.e. agriculture, recreation (parks with play equipment as well as a network of footpaths) and woodland. There is however a residential dwelling – Balmore House – located centrally between the settlements.

  • Overall Assessment for Purpose 1 The land is primarily undeveloped and provides openness between settlements. It includes some features and designations to discourage development and provides a sense of spaciousness although there is a lack of clear physical features directly between the settlements to prevent merging. The juxtaposition of the two settlements can be observed along Winchester Road. Purpose Score: Moderate/Strong Contribution
