Green Wedge (a) Between Blaby and Glen Parva (Sence Valley) – Parcel B

Purpose Question Assessment

Question 3C. Does the land contain historic assets that should be retained? Answer 3C: Yes. The land includes the Grand Union Canal where it forms part of the northern boundary of this land and this is a Conservation Area.

Question 3D. Do any assets within the land connect to other infrastructure in other areas and help form a continuous green lung from the countryside into urban areas? Answer 3D: The Grand Union Canal forms part of the northern boundary of this land and this is a green (and blue) infrastructure corridor. The network of hedgerows provide links to vegetation to nearby areas, although these do not permeate urban areas.

Overall Assessment for Purpose 3 The land includes a number of wildlife, biodiversity, landscape, and green and blue infrastructure assets. These link well across the land, albeit not significantly permeating into urban areas.

Infrastructure assets that should be retained? The land is indicative of the characteristics of the Sence and Soar Floodplain landscape character area, particularly in relation to its floodplain landscape, wetland meadow and wetland environment, localised views contained by and channelled by along river corridor, woodland vegetation concentrated along rivers, canal and urban edge and mature hedgerow boundaries and hedgerow trees. The hedgerows along the field boundaries provide a network across the land and link to pockets of more heavily treed areas. Also there is these link to the disused railway line, which include a line of vegetation extending East. As well as the River Sence, the land includes sizable bodies of water located in one of the fields.
