36. CONTRACTOR MANAGEMENT

The Group instructs and uses contractors to undertake statutory inspections, refurbishments, repairs, major works and other maintenance tasks.

In order to ensure that contractors working on our behalf are competent and skilled to undertake the work authorised, all contractors must be vetted as part of our process for approving suppliers. Health and Safety compliance must be detailed within any contract.

37. CONSTRUCTION, DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT

The CDM regulations apply to all construction, demolition and maintenance activities. The regulations aim to ensure that all such activities are planned, managed and implemented in a systematic and safe manner.

The regulations define 5 key duty holders: Client, Principal Designer, Principal Contractor, Contractors and Workers.

In most cases Hastoe will be the Client and will have the duty to make suitable arrangements for managing a project and maintaining and reviewing these arrangements throughout, so the project is carried out in a way that manages the health and safety risks.

For projects involving more than one contractor, the CDM regulations require the Client to appoint a Principal Designer and a Principal Contractor and make sure they carry out their duties.
