AGENDA ITEM NO. 10D
SARASOTA MANATEE AIRPORT AUTHORITY SEPTEMBER 27, 2021 MEETING STAFF NARRATIVE
REQUEST FOR APPROVAL: AUTHORIZATION FOR CEO/PRESIDENT TO PROCUREMENT AND EXECUTE CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT FOR THE SECURITY CHECKPOINT MODIFICATIONS PROJECT
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Due to recent increases in airline traffic, and the additional projected increases beginning in November, Airport Staff procured K2 Consulting to reevaluate the Security Checkpoint to determine if an additional (sixth lane) could be added. Based upon a coordinated effort with K2, TSA and staff, K2 was able to reconfigure the layout of the existing five lanes to include a sixth lane. Staff would like to expedite implementation of this project ahead of the the projected November increases, and is therefore requesting authorization for the CEO/President to procure and execute a construction contract up to $195,000.00.
NARRATIVE: The continued increase in passenger traffic has strained the capacity at the Airport's security checkpoint. In November, passenger counts will exceed the previous peak's realized in June and July, where the airport set the highest monthly passenger records in the history of the airport. Airport staff again hired K2 Consulting, a firm that specializes in security checkpoint layouts at airports, to analyze the current area and determine if there was an adjustment to the existing layout that would allow an additional checkpoint lane to be added, thus, reducing wait times and queues. The consultant was able to modify the layout based upon recently revised standards that allows the sixth lane to be incorporated into the existing space.
K2 and staff coordinated the design with TSA and has received their approval for the concept and installation. Authority staff would like approval from the Board to procure the installation of this plan, up to a construction cost amount of $195,000.00, to complete work prior to anticipated traffic for this upcoming season.
Construction is anticipated to take 30-calendar days for the project completion, and will be paid for with CARES funds.
Authority Staff recommends the Board authorize the CEO/President to procure, evaluate, and award a construction contract with the procured contractor for the Security Checkpoint Modifications project.
RECOMMENDATION: It is hereby recommended that the Board authorize the CEO/President to procure and execute a construction contract up to an amount of $195,000.00 for the Security Checkpoint Modifications Project.
