                    "text": "Climate change is defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as a change in the state of the climate that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer. Greenhouse gases directly contribute towards climate change. The Climate Change Act 2008 introduced a statutory target for the UK of reducing carbon dioxide () and[p99.4.1.3] other greenhouse gas emissions, by at least a 100% reduction from 1990 levels by 2050, and to contribute to global emissions reductions aimed at limiting global temperature rise to well below and [p99.4.1.4]to pursue efforts to limit temperatures to abov[p99.4.1.5]e pre-industrial levels. Subsequently, the Government has set an interim target to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035. Local planning authorities are bound by the legal duty set out in Section 19 of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, as amended by the Planning Act 2008, to ensure that, taken as whole, plan policy contributes to the mitigation of, and adaptation to, climate change.",

The[p99.4.2.4] first Stockport Climate Action Now Plan was developed to deliver this target (approved in October 2020) and was refreshed and renamed as the 'Climate and Nature' (CAN) Strategy in 2025.
