            "text": "And as for service to the University, Joe's strongest category (in my opinion), how can I even express the character and dedication that it takes to heed the pleas of the Senate President (me) to take on the task of chairing a Senate committee (Academic Policies) and serving on the Executive Committee at a time when the University was in an unprecedented state of turmoil—and when one lacks the protection of tenure? Having been through the wringer with that experience, Joe then agreed to continue to serve as chair of APC and agreed to serve as Senate Secretary beyond that. Even before Joe was employed at KSU, he had a history of volunteering his time and effort when he was needed. I had known Joe as a member of the Kentucky Philological Association for years prior to his employment here, and I was suitably impressed by his volunteering to edit the Kentucky Philological Review both when the former editor retired and again when another was supposed to step in as editor but was unable to perform that duty. Having been a reviewer for that journal in the past, I can attest to the amount of work involved in editorial duties, and Joe fulfilled those duties admirably, producing some of the finest editions of that journal to have been printed. And I would be remiss if I were to fail to mention that in a mere three years at KSU, Joe has not just served on but chaired three major committees: APC, the English Major Committee and (currently) the Composition Committee. Oh, and he has also agreed to be a faculty representative for SACSCOC. Joe's record of university service (and he has an equally weighty record at other institutions) is honestly one of the most impressive I've ever seen."
