"text": "Table 4 addresses those areas at the institution that serve in the capacity of teaching general education courses for all students at the University. All of the general education courses are mandatory although some are provided as options in satisfying knowledge in a particular category. For example, every student is required to complete English 101 and 102, English Composition courses six (6) credit hours. Student may choose an additional English course as they seek to satisfy a categorical general education requirement listed under Liberal Studies. Some programs, such as English and Fine Arts, have few student majors in their programs. However, these programs serve the general institutional population through providing service courses in general studies. English provides from four (4) to twelve (12) credit hours of courses through general education. (See Table 4 above)."

"text": "The institution could greatly benefit from increased enrollments in English, Mathematics, and other programs where low enrollments exist. With sixteen English majors and a faculty to student ratio of 1 to 1, there is ample time for faculty to engage in recruitment. Likewise, Mathematics has 40 student majors and eleven (11) faculty members constituting a 1 to 4 ratio. It is strongly recommended that both of these areas develop recruitment plans and actively engage in recruitment activities to increase the core number of students in their majors. The institution is carrying a costly burden to support the general education program through these programs."

The Center for Academic Persistence will engage these students in a series of programs to encourage them to select a major earlier in their matriculation. By guiding students into a major program earlier, the student's course choices would lead to a more efficient use of time allowing the student to complete his/her studies in an effective and appropriate time frame. This will help the institution improve our persistence and graduation rates."
